Eggingen-Mittelhart 1 (Oligocene of Germany)

Where: Baden-Württemberg, Germany (48.4° N, 9.9° E: paleocoordinates 48.2° N, 7.0° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Ulmer Schichten Member (Lower Freshwater Molasse Formation), MP 30 (28.4 - 23.0 Ma)

• basal "Ulm beds", Oligocene/Miocene transition (Werner, 1994 p. 9)

•Werner (1994, p. 202), however, says that only Eggingen-Mittelhart 2 provided a mammal fauna that is transitional between the Upper Oligocene and the Lower Miocene whereas Eggingen-Mittelhart 1 can clearly be dated as Upper Oligocene (MP 30).

•stratigraphy, originally entered as >>Late/Upper Oligocene<< to >>Early/Lower Miocene<< has been modified accordingly (TL)

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: lacustrine; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal, black, brown, calcareous, carbonaceous mudstone and unlithified sandstone

• The locality is in the so called "Ulmer Schichten" ("Ulm beds"), wich represent the Lower Freshwater Molasse in the Ulm area, the latter being part of the northern margin of the alpine molasse basin. The "Ulm beds" are also referred to as "subjurassic molasse" due to its position immediately south of the Swabian Jura (Schwäbische Alb) (Werner, 1994).
• "Graupensande" of the Brackwater Molasse (MN4b) cut down into deep brown to black, marly, highly fossiliferous bituminous mudstones ('chocolate marls') of the Lower Freshwater Molasse, the latter being partly interspersed with gastropod shell debris (Werner, 1994)

Size class: mesofossils

Preservation: original phosphate

Collected in 1983; reposited in the BSP, SMNS

Collection methods: bulk, sieve,

• The fossiliferous layer is not accessible anymore (Werner, 1994).

•EGMH-1 refers to material housed in the Wannemacher collection

•Original total collection size entry (4500 specimens) has been removed since individual specimen numbers have been entered for each taxon. (TL)
