Type specimens:

  • Metaxytherium crataegense: AMNH 26838, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Florindin Company Mine, which is in a Hemingfordian/Barstovian marine horizon in the Torreya Formation of Florida.
  • Metaxytherium calvertense: USNM 16757, a partial skeleton. Its type locality is Plum Point, south, Zone 10, which is in a Burdigalian estuary/bay sandstone in the Calvert Formation of Maryland.

Ecology: scansorial insectivore
