Sister taxa: Meles meles, Meles taxus, Meles thorali

Type specimen: FP1-2001-0564, a skull ( skull with P2-M1 in both dental series). Its type locality is Fonelas P-1, which is in a Gelasian/Pleistocene fluvial horizon in the Guadix Formation of Spain.

Ecology: scansorial insectivore
