Isernia La Pineta (3 colluvio level)
Basic information
Sample name: Isernia La Pineta (3 colluvio level)
Reference: A. Pineda, S. Channarayapatna, G. Lembo, C. Peretto, P. Saladie, and U. Thun-Hohenstein. 2020. A taphonomic and zooarchaeological study of the early Middle Pleistocene 3 colluvio level from Isernia La Pineta (Molise, Italy). Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports 33(102469):1-12 [ER 3892]
Geography
Country: Italy
State: Molise
Coordinate: 41.591568° N, 14.240828° E
Coordinate basis: estimated from map
Time interval: Middle Pleistocene
Max Ma: 0.61
Min Ma: 0.561
Age basis: Ar-Ar
Geography comments: The site is located in the middle upper part of the Volturno River basin close to the town of Isernia
The first Ar-Ar dating of crystals from 3 coll level gave a time of 0.610 Ma +/- 10 ka
New Ar-Ar measurements indicate a more recent chronology of 0.583-0.561 Ma
Isernia La Pineta correlates with Marine Isotope Stage 15 (MIS 15)

Environment
Lithology: siliciclastic (mixed)
Taphonomic context: fluvial deposit
Habitat comments: 3 coll level is contained on top of archaeosurface 3a within Unit 2 of unconformity-bounded stratigraphic unit (UBSU) 2
"It comprises calcareous loam, containing numerous crystals of volcanic origin"
"level 3 coll is placed in a stratigraphic unit comprising levels of sand and thin layers of gravel deposited by ephemeral rivers. Level 3 coll has been described as colluvial, a debris flow deposited on archaeosurface 3a containing resedimented materials."
While evidence of hominid bone modification is rare at this level, it is possible that the poorly preserved cortical tissue and natural abrasion striations could have masked possible anthropogenic activity
Tooth and cut marks suggest carnivores and hominids may have had access to the carcasses respectively however it is difficult to confirm the scale, timeline, and form of interaction

Sampling comments: 5700 remains were analysed from the site, with the remains being identified both anatomically and taxonomically
Bones that could not be taxonomically or anatomically identified were grouped by morphology
"only clearly identified cut marks have been considered in order to avoid any erroneous inferences or misinterpretations"
The following were excluded from the register:
