Bayan Ulan (IMM Arshanto Formation)
Basic information
Sample name: Bayan Ulan (IMM Arshanto Formation)
Reference: M. Paepen, H. Li, Y. Sun, and T. Smith. 2021. A late early to early middle Eocene mammal assemblage from Bayan Ulan (Inner Mongolia, China): Implication for the reassessment of the Arshantan Asian Land Mammal Age. Geobios 66-67:177-191 [ER 4098]
Geography
Country: Mongolia
Coordinate: 43° 7' 52" N, 111° 35' 18" E
Coordinate basis: stated in text
Scale: outcrop
Formation: Arshanto
Time interval: Early Eocene
Zone: MP10/12
Geography comments: the locality "is mostly known for its late Paleocene Gashatan" Bayan Ulan "fauna" from the Nomogen Formation
"The sampled horizons probably correspond to layers 4-6 of Qi’s stratigraphy (1987: pp. 8–10)", which is the entire Arshanto Formation excluding the lowest horizon (layer 3)
the Arshantan LMA including this fauna is said to be "late early to early middle Eocene" (late Ypresian or lower Lutetian) based most recently on Wang et al. (2019, Science China Earth Sciences), which is reasonable given the presence of Hyrachyus and its long age range
the MP zone equivalent is roughly MP10 to MP12 and most of the Arshantan is late Ypresian based on Wang e tal.

Environment
Lithology: claystone
Habitat comments: from "the red beds of the Arshanto Fm." and specifically "reddish clays"
Methods
Life forms: ungulates,other small mammals
Sampling methods: surface
Sample size: 59 specimens
Years: 1995
Museum: Inner Mongolian Museum
Sampling comments: the sample was "collected exclusively at Bayan Ulan during the Sino-Belgian expeditions" and does not include any material collected earlier
"collected by handpicking... on a surface of approximately a few hundred meters in diameter" by Thierry Smith, Dian-Yong Guo, Pei Jie Ning, Georges Lenglet, and Eric Dermience "on September 20th and 28th 1995"
the material is apparently in the Inner Mongolian Museum because specimen numbers are prefixed with IMM
